    RFQ: Four Piece Aluminum Assembly

Plan is for 10 units with a first article inspection if possible.

    Largest piece is approximately 2" x 2" x 10".

I currently have the 2D drawings out for 3D modeling. Sub can provide SolidWorks 2007, 2008, 2010, Pro Engineer Wildfire 2 or Wildfire 4.

What format would you like to have for quoting?

What tolerances should be called out for 2 items that nest but need to slide or rotate? Picture a shaft in a bearing or pin in a race.

Manufacturer will have input for final revision to maximize manufacturability.

Files will be available once I get a feel for the desired format and 3D modeling is complete. Estimated in less than a week.

    Thanks,

    John

John, if you leave it up to the individual, you'll be sending out 10 different file formats which is ridiculous. Pick a couple and go with that. Using software-specific formats isn't really a good idea because 1) it is extremely limiting to whom can open them and 2) will let the shop have access to the feature history of the part, making it easy to change accidentally. If I were you, I'd offer .igs, .sat, and .x_t.

You will also be well served to provide 2D prints with all notes, tolerances, etc. on them. These are usually provided as a .pdf. Without this, if you have to reject parts, how will anyone know if the parts were actually within tolerance? There's no tolerances on 3D models.

You need to come up with your own tolerances. Nobody knows your design criteria better than you do. Make the tolerances as wide as possible while still retaining functionality to reduce prices.
