    fishing lures

I want to get a multi cavity mold for a lure I designed so that I can pour more than one at a time. I have the master (made of wood). I have a two piece RTV mold that I have used for a while but the process is too slow and the mold is starting to show signs of degradation. I can send pics of examples of what I want, but I really don't know what steps to take next. I have called some local machine shops but no one seems to want to help me. Is this job too small? do I need to get the sample copied into a CAD program? Is there someone who can do this for me? how much does it cost? I have lots of questions hopefully someone here can help me take the next step.

    Thanks,
    Patrick

It might be helpful to know what your budget is.

You are looking for 1 piece with a complicated 3D shape with no CAD files.

    The shop has to:
1 Figure out what you want
2 Create a CAD file (Probably not trivial if it has an "organic" shape) [4 hours]
    3 Create a CNC program [1 hour]
4 Set up the machine and tools [1 hour]
5 Run the part [.5 hours]

That's 6.5 hours of work (I'm being pretty generous). At $65/hr that is over $400. Plus materials and shipping.

There is also probably little chance of you coming in for repeat work.

All those steps really add up. Molds are always expensive, even for fishing lures. If you can create the CAD file yourself, you will save a lot of money. Or possibly have a 3D scan of your wood master.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply! I know that these things cost money I have no problem paying a fair price for services. I do this as a hobby me and my sons enjoy fishing but buliding a lure from scratch and going out and catching fish with it is really cool. We spend alot of time together doing this. I have some friends who get some lures from me every now and then but by no means is this a business or for profit. If $400 is in the ball park I would be very interested in going forward. I would say my buget is $1000.00

Thanks again for any help or information!!

Can you post a picture of what you want made? That would go a long way to getting a ballpark figure on doing what you need.

these are some examples not exactly what I want but should give you an idea of what I want. I don't have a picture of the exact bait I want to mold but had these on hand.these are hand poured from a top port 2 piece aluminum injection mold. I would like it to be a 5 or 6 cavity mold.

    Thanks Patrick

have you considered making your own molds from plastic Mold and Cast Fishing Lures - How To's
I'm doing similar stuff but I'm designing for cnc a multitude of main aluminum molds that i can pour the plastic mold resin into and then make a mass amount of pouring molds for the plastisol lures ( I'm making molds to make molds)
but if i needed single molds or a couple then the plastic mold pouring in the video you'll find in the link is the most efficient way to go

I have done some of this rtv and resin moldin. Its ok but if your going to make multi cavity molds its not very practical.
