Bad idea? 4kw 20k rpm Spindle on a Charter Oak machine?
Wondering if 99% of the machining I will be doing will be aluminum, could I use a 4kw 20,000 rpm spindle motor? I would hope to be able to utilize the extra speed when milling parts from 6061 or 7075.
Bad idea because of the lack of torque?
Thanks

I use a 4kw spindle I don't have any good ally carbide end mills as yet
But I do use a 4 flute Hss 6mm end mill with 3 to 10 mm depth cuts at 3000-4500 rpm feed 150-600 with no problems
but you do need flood cooling with that end mill.

I use a 4KW water cooled spindle and it has cut lots of aluminum with no issues. I normally do not run up near 20K, I use solid carbide endmills and run between 9K - 11K depending on the side of the cutter and the number of flutes.

There is no general answer to this question. It all depends on what you are making. If you are cutting large 2 1/2 D parts with 1/2" end mills, then the answer is likely no (on this machine anyway) however is you are making intricate 3D stuff and finishing with 1/32 ball nose bits, you could certainly use the speed.
Spend a bit of time with a good feed and speed calculator (GWizard, HSM Advisor, FS Wizard) and see what the recommendations are for different kinds of jobs to see if it makes sense. Pay attention also to the HP requirements. Your 4KW spindle likely puts out about 2KW at 10,000 rpm and about 1 KW at 5000 rpm (see if the supplier can provide you a torque curve).

If your using Gwizard or some other in the Horse power setting set it to about 0.14 Kw or less these Spindles don't have a lot of torque under 10k

Thanks gents, about what I expected. Might look at getting a better motor and VFD and running a 2 speed belt drive instead. Something that can get up to 9k rpm possible. I saw someone on YouTubs doing that.
