From their web site: The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is the world's leading professional society advancing manufacturing knowledge and influencing more than half a million manufacturing practitioners annually.

It is a good network for meeting people and learning more about manufacturing. Good resource for researching tech info.

    SME

I agree with ConwayBr, it is a good networking source and they have a pretty extensive library to solve manufacturing questions. I was a member for awhile but let my membership lapse when I switched jobs, I re-upped at IMTS this year.

There are a lot of local chapters that you can get involved with. A good way to learn how others solve problems.

i still did not get the answer I was looking for can a machinest who works in a regular shop join the SME or do you have to be an engeneer, also I notice someone mention that you get a chance to see how other people are manufacturing , is in that kind of dangerous having someone come into you shop and seeing the way you do your work .
At my company you can not even have a second job they think you are sharing there secrets,

No, you don't have to be an engineer to join.
Several of my machinist joined just to get the discount on their car insurance.

No one is going to come poking around your shop. Your local chapter may offer tours of a facility near you showing off the latest technology.
Not really aimed at machinist per say but lots of good resources and training programs for all areas of manufacturing. SME puts on all the big machine tool shows in the US. You get Manufacturing Engineering magazine each month which is a very good source of info for whats going on in the mfg business. Check out the web site.
    I've been a member since 1975.

1975 man that is a long time I was not even born,
yea I thought that it was not really aim at machinest, I figure that out when I went to a company tour, and I seen people that were more in the engenering department, but I must say it was really cool seeing how other people manufacture there own parts,.buy the way I dont have a shop I am just a machinest who is going to school at night, and I am trying to see what kind of things people make and how they do there manufacturing, it gets my mind of the same production work I do all the time,
