Small Machine Questions - What would you like to see?

Hi All,

I have just completed our new MK1 machining center. The whole idea was to be able to get it to be able to roll through a 36" door and run on single phase and or 3 phase. It is on Linear rails and using a 4 HP, Liquid cooled 24,000 RPM spindle,1HP AC servo motors with 2,500 line encoders, 1-1/8" diameter ball screws, coolant system, limit switches etc The machine base alone weighs 800 lbs and total machine weight is about 1,500 lbs. Clocking in at 500 IPM rapids. I needed the extra weight. It turned out fantastic. We installed the Industry Controls software (Mach Industrial) and couldn't ask for more.

Now for the questions to you,
What size travel would you want from a machine this size?

I am considering using 5,000, 10,000, 24,000 and 40,000 RPM spindles universal to switch from one to the next. Which would you choose?

What different about the machine would you like to see?

Any and all comments are GREATLY appreciated !!

Thanks !!

Kirk

What I'd like to see: Panels for a full enclosure, optional ATC, integration of the CNC Brain...price point at HALF of a Haas SuperMini.

What are the base castings for this unit? What's the spindle taper? What are the travels? What's the price?

Oh yeah...how about a LATHE??? It's about time someone brought to market a decent CNC lathe as a compliment to these "larger" small mills

Panels for the full enclosure in process.

ATC is optional

CNC Brain can be utilized with ease. I am using the New Industry Controls motion control board. It has 8 I/O's already on the board PLUS an opto 22 connection so I/O is only limited to the number you want to buy and the amount of space in your electrical cabinet.

Price point - $10,000 for the machine with a 0-5000 RPM (30 taper) or 24,000 RPM with an ER20 collet nose. ATC is an option and well below the other guy.

Travels -
Model MK1 (designed for use with a 6" 4th axis and 5th axis rotating spindle) X-12" Y-6" Z-12"
Model MK2 X-24" Y-12" Z-16"

THANKS !!

Kirk

I have a 14" x 40" bench top taken apart and checking where to change the casting. If you look at my website http://www.majesticmachinery.com and click on lathes, I am considering the RK1440-1 and the RK1440B models. There are a few major things in consideration at the moment.
1) Use existing cast or start from scratch
2) How to integrate threading with current hardware without getting too carried away with the price
3) Use one or two ball screws on the "Z". I have seen retrofits that use the flat and V configuration of ways slide uneven and "catch up" after the screw has stopped turning. Or use linear guides, thus new cast.....

In other words, it's coming. I have a lot on my plate but I will have a finished model by October or sooner per the current plan.

Thanks !!

Kirk

Assuming the machine control reads G-Code a USB Drive would be nice. Also the option to DNC from both USB and RS232C.

This machine looks pretty good.

BTW: the CNC area on your site is under construction

Hi,

The control is the Industrial version of Mach 3. It accepts G code, has 6 USB ports, networking etc, no problem for DNC not the mention that is has 180 gig storage.

Thanks and yes, the CNC section is under construction... I hope to have some time for it very soon.

Thanks !!
