3HP Colombo Router Spindle + VFD for under $2k

So we've been trying to put together a Colombo spindle package for the diy builders out there, and we've settled on a few different options. The idea is to offer something a little more accessible. Feel free to pipe in if you would like to see something else offered, and of course if you have any other general comments. We're going to take a vote to see which package most are interested in.

Options:

3HP RV73-1 (packaged with 3.0HP Hitachi X200 Micro Drive)
-220V 18,000RPM 300HZ
-Single radial bearings front and rear
-ER25 collet capacity

Package Price: $1795

3HP RV73-2 (packaged with 3.0HP Hitachi X200 Micro Drive)
-220V 18k/24k RPM 300/400HZ
-Dual angular contact bearings at tool end (higher load capacity)
-ER25 collet capacity

Package Price: $1895

2HP RV73-2
(packaged with 2.0HP Hitachi X200 Micro Drive)
-220V 18k/24k RPM 300/400HZ
-Dual angular contact bearings at tool end (higher load capacity)
-ER25 collet capacity

Package Price: $1745

Anybody interested? Also, is there any interest in having any of these packages prewired?

The Hitachi X200 drive specifications can be found here: http://www.blurrycustoms.com/docs/X200_instruction.pdf

What are the capabilities of these spindles?

Can they cut metal without committing suicide?

Aluminum, brass, steel, depth of cut?

Matt

These spindles are made for wood/plastics. Though light cuts in non-ferrous metals have been achieved, much higher horsepower would be recommended for steels. And Colombo recommends compressed air or liquid cooling for steels.

I am sure there are other members here who have experimented with other materials, so hopefully they will chime in.

As far as manufacturer recommended materials, here is a good chart to refer to. http://pdscolombo.com/spindle_material.htm

Option 2 makes the most sense.

NICELY thought out machine design!

You guys have voted! (kind of ) And we weren't just messing with you, here is the package that we are offering.

We are going to do a special on the 3HP RV73-2 (dual A/C bearings) package. These will be packaged with the Delta VFD, that has the sensorless vector drive technology, and will accept both single and three phase input at 220VAC. The price on this package is $1,895. This package comes with a brand new spindle and VFD.

We will try and keep this available for as long as possible, but if you guys are looking for a package like this, now is the time. If you are interested, please contact us.

This is very tempting. What is the weight of the spindle?

Ha... it is meant to be!!

The RV73/2 weighs about 18 lbs.

I don't know how your machine is setup, but if you are looking for reference point. We put this spindle on our IronMan machines, and they throw these spindles around at 250 IPM no problem, running 387 ozin stepper, 1:1 coupled to a 5 tpi ball screw.

Let me know if you have any questions about them. I can also provide a dimension drawing if you need.
