Hey Carlo,

I assume the cutter are resharpen-able but I other then that no clue. I never checked to see if they make them in steel or other metals.

The stickers are not cut all the way through...just the vinyl. The backing is not cut other then maybe a small indentation. You will want just enough weight to get through the vinyl and nothing else. So the board under does not matter.

Orginally I had the spring design and it did cut into the board..the blade lasted about 5 min

There are services that regrind plotter blades; as myself I'll buy carbide blades in 5-packs off of Ebay and gauge the sharpness of a used blade by the sound it makes hitting the trash can. I've had good luck using cheap white laminate shelving board as a backing. It is stiff, smooth, cheap, and cleans up well.

For those who have built these things, how difficult might it be to make a regular roller-style vinyl cutter? Dot-matrix style.... I have seen projects like this. some look quite 'easy', others look horrible and difficult.. This seems like something idealy suited to DIY.. 2 motors! mechanical reduction, so you can use simple unipolar transistor drives? yes?

They must have some type of knurled screw that you turn to increase or decrease the force. You then have to cut a very small piece to see if it is set right. If all is well it will peel off with no problem. If you change the type of material (density, thickness, blade) then you have to readjust it. Maybe the really expensive ones are automatic.

Wow, I have a K2 3925G machine and I am looking to buy a Vinyl cutter...but i think you have a great idea there... I may just go that route instead.. I have been laser cutting the Vinyl but the edges are amber in color...which is ok for darker stickers but for white vinyl it just doesn't look good.
