Should we request a sub-forum for the UHU servo controller ?

Hi.

The thread about the UHU servo controller is very long.
More then 2000 messages.
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14217

Lots of useful information is difficult to find in so many messages in one thread.

Would it be better if we ask cnczone to make a sub-forum for the UHU servo controller ?
Then we can make threads on different subjects.
Like a thread on the HP UHU, a thread on the UHU parts list, and lots of others.
If you want to read up on one subject then it would be much easier. Without getting lost in the many messages.

The first message in the sub-forum would be a link to the current thread on the UHU.
Then the info in it will still be easy to find, and will not be lost.

We have talked about this before.
I would like to know how many are for or against it.
If many are for it, then the poll would be a good argument to present to the maintainers of cnczone, to convince them a UHU sub-forum would be useful.

Thanks all :-)

Hopefully i can figure out how to make the poll :-)
Vroemm.

Yea man you're right !
That's a simple but great idea, it will make things a lot easier especially for the new comer.

to the maintainers of cnczone: GREAT IDEAS CAN ARISE ONLY WHEN OLD IDEAS ARE DISCARDED !

regards,
cnc2.

What could possibly be the reason to not have one?

Could the NO voters give us their arguments please.
I am very astonished by the NO votes.

I would rather suggest a sub-forum for all DIY drives in general. UHU specific forum could become obsolete since it seems that UHU is not being actively developed any more and substitutes are on the way (Kreutz's design etc).

So I vote for DIY drives sub-forum. That would provide a new home also for ELM drive, many stepper drives etc.

Offtopic: some forum clean-up might be needed some day since there are so many quiet forums in here.

Then one thread is about the UHU,
the next thread about who knows what stepper drive,
the next thread again about the UHU.

It would not always be clear from the SUBJECT about which drive it is.
It would become a enormous mess.
We would be a lot worse of then now.

What would be fine is a folder DIY-drives with in it folders for serveral drives.
Like this.

cnczone->DIY-drives->UHU
cnczone->DIY-drives->HP-UHU
cnczone->DIY-drives->somestepperdrive
cnczone->DIY-drives->otherstepper
cnczone->DIY-drives->bestservodriveever

Still each drive its own folder or sub-forum.
And users can create a thread in the folder of the drive he/she is interested in.

Otherwise it would become a worst mess then it is now.

A forum is useful as long as the drives are used.
It is not only about development.
If in 5 years time some newbie wants to ask some thing there should be a forum.

and substitutes are on the way (Kreutz's design etc).
Extra folder for HP-UHU is fine by me.

Well if we choose that line, shouldn't geckodrive forum for example have sub-forums G201, G202, G203, G212 Gxxx. Gyyy, Gzzz? That way we end up with dozens sub-forums with very little activity. I think people are smart enough to specify their drive in topic if there is chance of mistake.

Almost all subjects specify the model:

But how to draw line which drive should get own sub-forum and which not? I think there are literally hundreds if DIY stepper drive designs and variations of them, and the number is growing every week. If we add all, it will be chaos :-)

I'm not wanting to limit discussion about DIY drives, but to keep forum more readable. From the very first day I browsed CNCzone, I have thought that CAM software brands, CAD software brands, servo drive brands etc. should not have own forums. I generally think that forums should be grouped by topic, not by brand.

If there would be too much activity under topic, it could be divided into finer topics in sub-forums like troubleshooting, assembly, configuration etc.

Sure the are benefits in brand approach too, but I find topic grouped forums easier to follow. It's just my opinion.

Good point.

I propose this:

One sub-forum for all drives.

When one drive gets a lot of questions over a long time then it could be time to consider its own sub-forum.
This then can be discussed per drive in the forum, with a poll if useful.

The UHU has already generated more then 2000 messages, then the UHU gets its own sub-forum from start.

We start with:
cnczone->DIY-drives->other-drives
cnczone->DIY-drives->UHU

From the very first day I browsed CNCzone, I have thought that CAM software brands, CAD software brands, servo drive brands etc. should not have own forums. I generally think that forums should be grouped by topic, not by brand.

I think you've got a point.
And the by brand approach has also a point.
I do not know how to combine the benefits of both.

My above proposal is in part a mixture which might work good enough.

Vroemm, that sounds reasonable approach. Lets request DIY drives forum and see later which ones would get enough posts to get own sub-forum. Moderators could relocate drive specific threads to its new sub-forum once it's created.

Your leaving out starting also with a UHU forum :-))
At the moment 84% has voted for a UHU forum.
And the extra 'other-drives' forum is a good bonus :-)

I was planning to wait until monday.
Then the weekend hobbyists have had the chance to read and reply to the poll and our messages.
Then on Monday submit a request for:
cnczone-> DIY-drives-> Other-drives
cnczone-> DIY-drives-> UHU
