    Stepper Questions 23 vs 34

    Think about ordering this kit.

    NoSleep Studio

Was curious about the Pro and Cons of Nema 23 vs 34 mounts?

    Any thoughts?

    thanks

    Matt

This is what I have found but don't take it as gospel because there are a lot more versed people than me.

    Nema 23:
    cheaper
Typically found in lower end cnc kits
    lots available as surplus

    Nema 34:
    larger package footprint
    more available torque
    more expensive

The only concern that I would have with that kit is the resolution. A lot of people run gear reduction to help the motors out and to gain more resolution. I am going to run 3:1 on my new table and my old one ran 10rev/inch.

I figured the resolution can easily be fixed with a belt drive reduction set up. Looking at the drive plates it should be pretty easy to adapt the reduction drive to it or once it's up and running I would be able to cut new drive plates to convert it.

I was looking at the ease of this kit with all parts being cut and ready to mount.

These plates have mounting for 23 but I would prefer the 34 to go with the CandCNC kit I will be purchasing.

My setup does run the belt reduction and Nema 23 motors. To be honest it would be cool to have bigger motors, but I don't need them. Atleast I haven't talked myself into how much I absolutly have to have bigger motors.

That kit does look really clean. Not a lot of extra stuff and the assembly looks well thought out.

How big of a table are you going to make? What type of cutter? What type of parts and metal are you going to be cutting?

All of this is what I should have taken into account when buying my drive setup. Instead I bought the cheapest setup I could find that people didn't give bad reviews of. The size 23 motors have plenty of torque for non-contact material removal when used on smaller machines.

BBR, I have the bladerunner setup, and think I will like it. I have seen the no- sleep first hand and believe I could have done 90% of what I need to do with it....but I just overbuild everything..........jb

Im going to start building a 4 x 6 table with one of the Candcnc Plazpak kits. I plan on using the Nema 34 Steppers so I hope they can make the drive plates with the 34 mounting holes.

My base frame is going to 3" square stock with the gantry assembly mounted on top using 2"x3" aluminum railing.

The gantry kit seems pretty well thought out and would work well in a heavy duty build. For the most part its the frame that supplies the rigidity for the machine. The V rail set up is nice and has been used on many large scale machines.

This will be used for a multi-process machine- plasma, routing of aluminum faceplates for enclosures and maybe some engraving.

Wondering what your building? What part of this gantry wouldn't hold up to your expectations?

BBR, I want the ability to put a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" steel on my machine. If you keep your gantry around 80lbs, the 620 oz 23 steppers should do fine for plasma since the tool (torch) has no drag on the work. Routing would depend on how much you were cutting. I only plan to use my machine for plasma and am building it fairly heavy just to support the material.....jb

I went to his shop one afternoon and would have bought one from him if I had not already invested about 6K in my setup. I am still a month out on mine, and I probably could have been cutting parts a couple of months ago if I had gone with his.......jb
