newbie questions

I just got my first PicStep board working (Yeah!) and I had some questions.

First, I ran the motor both directions in fullstep mode using TurboCNC to drive it. When I move it at the slow jog rate the movement is smooth but it's fairly noisy. When I move it at the fast jog rate it is much quieter. 1/8 step mode has similar results. Is it typically noisier at slow rate or do I need to do some tuning in TCNC?

Second, as soon as I stop moving the motor, it begins to emit a high whine. This whine changes pitch as the motor sits there not moving. Note that I did have the "enable" line hard-wired so the h-bridges were still "on" Is this normal and can I tune it away?

Sorry if this are newbie questions... I was excited to see that motor move after inhaling solder fumes all afternoon and these were my first observations about the motor, etc.
