Just following your thread a bit.

Since you are familiar with assembly languages. Have a look a the the Parallax SX 48 chip. I have the Developers board and a few of the SX48 proto boards. At up to 75 mips and 36 pins for I/O, the proto boards are hard to beat for under $10. As I recall, there were program examples for LCD interfacing.

OK will Google it later today. In the mean time what size is the display, that is how many characters per line and how many lines?

Hi DC - I have seen those microcontrollers before. I am no stranger to Parallax....I use some of their Basic Stamp 2 stuff when I put together lesson plans for Boy Scout projects. I have a small group of techies who like to do stuff like that. As far as using the microcontrollers, right now, I can prototype pretty much anything using a Microchip product, because I have my account rep on speed dial :-)

I havent fired it up yet, but according to http://www.techdesign.be/projects/013/013.htm, it is 120 columns and 32 rows (apparently it is a graphic LCD).
