Hello, I am in United Kingdom and purchased Velleman VM111 PIC programmer and experimentation board. I have problem communicating to the board. (I have contacted Velleman who have not resolved problem and Maplins - still aiting for repsonse). Here is what I have done. 1. connected it to 12 V DC regulated power supply; more about this later. The green LED (power) is on. 2. connected the serial cable to COM1 of my laptop, DELL D600. 3. run the assembler program, MPASMWIN on demo1 example; no errors. 4. run PIC prgrammer program, PROGPIC2.exe and open file demo1.HEX 5. put switch to position PROG (big red LED flashes, Read/Write red LED is on) everything up to now is as per the manual. 6. I select Port/COM1, the Read/Write red LED goes off and I see the error: K4048 not found at COM1. When I select ok, the pop up disappears and once more the Read/Write red LED is on. I have since made an unregulated 15 V DC supply so that rules one possible cause. I had a quick check of devices installed on my laptop and no device uses IRQ 3. (manual states that 3 and 4 should not be used by anything but COM1). It shows me that COM1 uses IRQ 4 and I have internal modem fitted on COM 3 using IRQ 5 so there does not seem to problem with interrupts. Do you know what the problem is? Is there any diagnostics I can run to find out more about the problem? I have been reading here that the rs232 port on PC may not be the right level so will look investigate that. Thanks. |

| Hi! I had same problem, but then I realised that some other software is using the COM1 port. When I resolved that problem everything was working fine. Other advice is that you double check your k4048 board. Hope my advice helped ..... |

| thanks for suggestions so far; keep 'em coming! I will try another pc. re: software using COM1; as far as I know there is no other applications accessing it. I am using the cable supplied with the kit - which is straight through but read on here that it should be "null modem"; i.e. 2-3 crossed over? Is that right or is straight through correct? Surely they would not supply the wrong cable....... I also read that some of the newer laptops do not supply the correct voltages on the COM1 port - is that a likely cause? Will using a USB-serial adapter solve the problem? |

If it falls into the catagory of "intelligent" programmer ie has its own pic to drive timing etc then a USB adaptor may deal with the low voltage issues and sleep mode issues new laptops have. If it falls into the catagory of "pin wiggler" and drives the serial pins with specific timings to program the target pic: then the USB adaptor mucks that all up.( this type usually require a .dll to give the program direct port access in 2000/XP
