bridgeport 412 and phase converter

Hello all

I'm new to this forum and after some help

I'm intrested in purchasing a Bridgeport 412. I believe they have a 7.5hp main spindle motor. What my question is what sort & power phase converter will I need to run this from a single phase 230v supply.

Also what sort of running cost am I likely to see when in opperation.

Also been looking for a manual to download for this machine if anyone can help with that

Thanks for any help

Martin

You need 1.5 to 2 times bigger idlers, or phase converter than machine. This can be done in stages to save costs. Example start a 5 hp converter, then just a 10 hp. three phase motor. Building your own phase converter is a doable project. Look in to tuning voltages with run capacitors

On this side of the pond, you'd need wiring and circuit breakers for a 40 amp circuit to run 7.5 hp.

Karl

EDIT. PS>. I don't know this machine. If the spindle is a three phase motor, take a look at a 10 hp. VFD to run your machine.

A rotary isn't hard to make and would cost a few hundred with new parts, I can let you have drawings and possible places to get parts.
The Bridgeport is going to have a vfd and if it's anything like the yaskawa thing on my matsuura[size of a small fridge with a huge heatsink] I wouldn't have thought it was very efficient, so a new vfd might be better option. Check the wiring and see what the rest of the lectroincs are run from, my drives and power supplies all used three phase so an easy rewire for single phase wasn't possible.

The Bridgeport 412 has a Fanuc spindle drive with feedback to the control for tapping. Depending on the age some were analogue and later ones were digital.
Some have rigid tap as well but all have spindle orientation for the tool change. They work far better than a VFD would.

These machines usually came with either Fanuc OM or Heidenhain but they both had the Fanuc spindle drive.
Putting a VFD in would not be possible..the softwre is looking for spindle feedback and precisley controls spindle speed.
