Wrong Inverter/Spindle combination perhaps

I think I may have made a mistake.

I bought one of the Chinese 1.5kw spindle motors (Air cooled) that we see on ebay all the time. It has the following specification.

220v, 6.5A, 400Hz

My inverter drive is 1.5KW VFNC1S-2015PL-w(3)
0.5 to 200Hz, default setting: 0.5 to 80Hz, maximum frequency: 30 to 200Hz.

So the motor frequency is 400hz and the drive frequency 200hz.
Have I got it wrong?

Yes.

It will only spin at half its rated speed.

Thanks Mike.

Is it normal then that spindle motors are 400hz ? The motor is rated at 24000rpm which means I will only get 12,000. I want to cut aluminium and wood on my flatbed router. Will that be fast enough?

I have 3 inverter drives and all are 200hz

I have a drilling spindle that is 1000Hz, so 400Hz isn't all that strange.

Is it fast enough? It all depends on the size of your cutters. very small cutters like lots and lots of rpms.

Well, the collet chuck is Er11 so max size cutter will be 7mm

Hi George,

If you have an vfd already, then I would try it out and see if you are happy with the results, otherwise return it and get the correct one.

Buy me a Beer?

Don't run it below 6000-8000 rpm or you'll burn it up. Any slower and it won't get enough cooling air.

Wow, thanks Gerry,

I may have to look for another VFD, that's a pity because I only just bought the 200hz 1.5Kw drive. I like the look of the Chinese spindle motors but didn't clock that they were 400hz. That's what I get for not reading the small print.

So, it's quite clear, I must match the VFD to the Spindle motor.

As a side issue these spindle motors come as 'Air cooled' or 'Water cooled' I've time to change my mind. Which is better. Water cooling sounds complicated.
