Hurco SM1 CNC with VFD anyone?

Hey:

I have an '84 hurco SM1 CNC mill with the pnuematic manual spindal speed control. I would like to put a VFD on it. It is 3hp

Is anyone out there running this setup?

It has high and low gear as well as a dial adjustable pnuematic speed control.

Where do i start?

If it is any thing like the manual VariSpeed system, I have removed this and fitted a 1:1 motor to gearbox with timing belt arrangement, the 2 speed gearbox is an asset.
You may want to get a 5hp VFD to allow some derating for 1 phase.
Check the motor to see if it is 4 pole, 1745 rpm?
Generally you can run these motors at 2x the base speed by using up to 120Hz output from the VFD.

When you say derating, do you mean that it won't produce it's full 3hp?

Can anyone out there recomend a 5hp vfd that is one phase in 3 phase out? The only one I have found so far is $600 compared to about $250 for the 3hp models i've been looking at.

I just checked, it's a 4 wire 1800rpm motor.
