Hello, I have attached a Hitachi SJ200-022NFU2, 3 HP - VFD to the 2HP, 3-phase motor on my Sheldon Lathe. I followed the instruction booklet for the wiring, then performed the “Power-Up Test” with the correct results. Then I configured the initial run parameters per the instructions. When I turn the potentiometer up, just before the motor starts to spin, I get a very high pitched whining noise. As I continue increasing the pot, and the motor increases in speed, the whining lessons a little bit, but it remains. The sound is definitely coming from the motor and not the lathe itself. Any ideas of what could be causing this? The only thing I was not positive about setting up the VFD was the number of poles on the motor. I entered 4, which was the default value. The motor has 9 wires coming out of it and they are grouped as follows: (4+5+6), (1+7+L1), (2+8+L2), (3+9+L3), is this correct? If this is correct, what could be causing the whining, and how would I fix it? I thank you in advance for the help. Chip |

| On some VFD's you can change the switching frequency which may cure it, you may also have loose laminations or.. in the motor. The pole count can be obtained from the motor nameplate rpm. A 60hz 2 pole motor will run ~3500rpm, a 4 pole ~1700 range. Al.

| Good to hear you got it working. ![]() The whining is the VFD CHOPPING the supply to the motor which is the way it makes the 3 phase power. Some questions... 1). What have you set the current limit setting to? 2). Can you measure the input mains with a tong tester? 3). What is the motor plate ratings. 4). Does the motor plate have details of the wires as you describe them? It is probably a dual voltage motor. If that is how the wiring was don't change it unless you have a reason. 5). Was it originally run on 220v 3 phase?
