    Help with 3-phase motor

I'm trying to wire up a press brake that I just bought. It has a 9-wire 220/440 5hp motor. I have 220 Delta three phase (I think). Anyway, it's two 120v and a 210v. I hooked it up L1 to 1,6,7---L2 to 2,4,8---L3 to 3,5,9. I get a hum from the motor and it kinda moves back and forth and it will burn out the fuses if left on too long. Did I do it right? Can the motor be bad? It has a forward and reverse switch. Does something need to be changed in there? Please help.

I just finished wiring up the smaller motor that powers the adjustment for the depth of bend and it works fine. I followed the instructions for testing the motor that I found here: http://homemetalshopclub.org/news/may05/schematic.gif and everthing checked out fine. I'm in a panic because I have a job that's supposed to be ready in the morning or I get this

The connections you gave are usually for a delta connected motor, for star typically it is 4,5,6, connected together and the phases fed to 1-7, 3-9, 2-8.
What does the 5hp motor operate, it can't be the brake itself if it is only 5hp can it?

Yes, that is how I have it, and yes that is the main motor. It has a huge flywheel and some sort of variable pulley setup, maybe that is how it gets enough power. I bent some 3/16 mild steel 44" length with it. Didnt even strain. Really pleased with the machine. I bought it on ebay for $2500 bucks. Had to drive from Arkansas to Chicago to get it, but they loaded for free and gave me some tooling to go with it (had to swing back thru Indianapolis for that). It has a little slack here and there but it will work good enough for me.

Usually the 'Crank' type just makes one complete revolution so it often does not matter which direction, the motor probably runs all the time and a clutch comes in to operate the brake.
