Fuji motor / static converter hook up?

Working on getting a Tsugami model T-SPL turret lathe running.
This was running in a shop consistently with no problems with 3phase
input from the mains up untill it started tripping one of the overloads just after start up. One person was saying it ran fine untill attempting to use the carriage drive which is dc driven? It ran and sounded smooth with nothing out of the ordinary happening for about 45 seconds or so. I pulled the drive apart and it smells like smoke might have come out of it at one time or another. I do not know for sure though if this is the cause or not.

I do not have 3ph at the garage so I have a older cedarburg series 1 model 1200 1ph to 3ph static converter that I am trying to install for now and see if it will run on that with the carriage drive turned off/disconnected.
After wireg in the converter it just hums after pushing the start button so I immediatly disconnect power thru the main switch.
The converter red light is not glowing yet I am getting 127 ac volts,
measured via neutral wire at the "third leg". Bad converter? Or,
I am wondering if I am placing the 3rd leg at the correct terminal location
on the magnetic contactor?
On the contactor their is an actual "3phase" symbol. I assume this is where
the 3rd phase to the motor goes. trouble is their are 2 terminals that look like this symbol could possibly be relating too. One directly above it and directly below it.
There are three 3ph mtrs on this machine also. 1 for coolant, spindle speed
control, and the main motor. Am i correct in assuming these shouldn't affect
start up with the converter trying to start just the main motor?
Also is there any info on wiring standards as to the numbering and lettering
is concerned? example, on the main wiring bus their is numbered locations
from 1-9, yet in the cabinet the conactors have numbering on the wires
like 55,51,101,111,u1,v1,w1,u11,v11,w11,,,,,am interested in learning
how this system works,
If pics will help I can download some
Thanks much
Den

I am thinking the smart thing to do would be to purchase a VFD and wire it directly
to the motor.
