Talking I Got Vfd

Let me re-phrase that, I got an old VFD from a co-worker today

Now, The mill I currently have is a 1 HP single phase (220v) cap. start motor.
My problem is the VFD is only rated 1/2Hp 110vac input, 3 phase 220v output.

I am thinking this VFD will not work with the current motor as it is under sized, also can a cap. start motor be used with a VFD?
I am contemplating buying a new 1/2 HP motor, with out cap start. But i am assuming the obvious.... that I will have less cutting torq available? am I right?

Oh, so it's not contagious....that's cool. You are correct...VFD meant for running 3 phase motor from single phase power...

You may have a couple of problems, number one you need a three phase motor, but if the original is 1hp and the VFD is 1/2hp, unfortunately you probabally cannot even fit a 1/2 hp as most VFD's when used on single phase are de-rated by at least 25%.

VFD's are very cool. That little one you have would be appropriate for a 3 phase gantry hoist or other small industrial motor.
My hydraulic power unit used on a test stand had its Leeson VFD croak last week. Found a very good low cost source at www.driveswarehouse.com and bought a Hitachi unit.
AL - these vfd's do not derate the motor hp.

It would feel right at home in my workshop driving my lathe.

Not exactly true; most under 3hp will run the rated motor size; depends on make but I have been reading on another forum that most will provide enough ummmph from 1 phase

All I can say is that I used one of the "package" deals from http://www.dealerselectric.com/ and it is a 2HP motor and Teco VFD.
I run it off 220 single phase and have had no problems with "ummmph" except when I try to run it at VERY slow speeds. This is on a RF31 mill/drill and with the present belting setup, I get a reliable 300-2700 rpm range. If I try to run it close to the 200 rpm range for anytime, I get a drop out from "overheating".
Of course, I could change the belt and drop it down even lower or increase as necessary. As the original is designed to 2500 rpm max, I am a bit cautious about pushing the upper limit of rpm.

$282 seems inexpensive for a new vfd and 1 hp motor from what else I've read (which isn't much). Are there better deals out there (on new stuff)?
