Buy me a Beer?

You would need to know the wire size used for the outlet and the breaker size?
Al.

Hi
There should be an Amp rating on the lathe motor, it should not exceed the Amp rating of the breaker connected to the outlet in your shop.

Here is another question... Are you going to do speed control with pulley reduction or do you want to use a VFD???

It would be rare to find a motor over 5hp that would run on single phase. How ever 220 outlets have different amp rating depending on their original intended use. You should have an electrician check your existing outlet you plan on using and he can determine what size load it will take. And 5hp is exteme overkill. You also dont mention the lathe model make or size. Most home hobby lathes will work fine with no more than 1 1/2 hp or smaller. Mike

and yes I would like to use a VFD and also bassically all I want to do is since I have is the dryer electrical outlet in my garage and I dont use it what I was thinking of doing bassikly have a wire cored connect to the VFD that it would connect to the electrical dryer outlet.
hope that makes some kind of sence if not
please let me know how I can go about hooking this up.
thanks again.

Most likely it will be wired in 10g, if so it will be good for 30amps ~7.5hp.
If using a VFD you won't be plugging the motor but you most likely will not be going with that large of a motor.
