    noise questions

    hey gang!

I have a automation direct gs2 vfd for a 1hp 3 phase motor. Got it all hooked up great and love it, but i used regular 14 gauge wire. The interference is awful with steppers by it (the motor won't even turn properly, and i didn't even get to fool with the steppers with the same interference).

Does anybody know where i could get isolated wire for a VFD? i can only find huge quantities. Maybe someone here has a lot and could sell me some. Stepper wire is only ~ 18/22 gauge and the manual said use 14 gauge. Would double-wiring stepper wire work?

    Cheers fellas

mcmaster.com i just got some 16-4 shielded cable. you can order in single foot quantities. 9700T46 is their part #. but you can look around for other sizes.

havent had any interference with my vfd on my 8x14 lathe i just installed it on, but it only been installed for one day. :P

and when you ground the shield, ground it only on one end

    perfect mate!

that fixed the problem thanks so much.

    now 2 quick questions:
when i ground the shielding wire on the vfd, the circuit breaker pops. Only 1 side is grounded. I am hoping this doesn't mean that somehow i nicked the inner cable and its grounding itself out?

    And second

i would really like to get the vfd hooked up to the computer now so i can control spindle speed, on/off and direction all in code. I got a usb-rs485 adapter and a driver for it but im not sure how to hook it up to the vfd and what i have to do in mach to get mach talking to the vfd. I think i know how to set up different pulleys though.
    here is the adapter

here is how the vfd is set up

go to page 8 of 10.

A push in the right direction would go a long ways. If nobody knows the answer to this after a couple of days im going to try the second question in the mach forum.

Thanks so much again in advance!

    cheers!

    Thanks so much!

im not sure whats causing your circuit breaker to pop. But i grounded my shield at the motor, and the green wire at both ends.

i have a different vfd. have you tried looking at the mach3 manual and seeing what outputs to use? are you trying to use the PWM output to control the spindle? you could use a board that takes step frequency and converts it to a 0-10 vdc signal to control the vfd. also used on PWM DC motor speed controllers.

You should have a system ground wire to the VFD and continue on the the frame of the motor, the 3 phase from the VFD to the motor should be tightly twisted, if using separate conductors, the ground wire should be run parallel but not twisted with the 3 phase.
Disconnect the control in and see if the breaker still pops.
