    Drilling PCBs

I have seen many PCB drilling machines like below image.
They have a metal base on which we mount PCBs for drilling.
My question is what happens when the Z axis which is bringing the drill bit to PCB for drilling and the drill bit touch the metal plate below PCB. Will it not blunt or cut the drill bit? How they avoid the drill bit being touch to metal work plate?

The video of the machine in action is here, but i cannot get clarification to my doubt by watching it or any other similar machines drilling PCBs.

This is just a guess, but I think that some people mount the PCB in a "window frame fixture" instead of placing the back of the PCB directly against the table.

Think of mounting the PCB like you would mount the glass in a window frame. If you place a window frame on a flat surface such as a table, there will be a gap between the window glass and the table surface, while the frame itself sits directly on the table.

Any picture or video would be good,
Do you drill one PCB at a time or many PCBs?

All PCB manufacturers use entry and backup materials when drilling copperclad laminates.

The drill is never supposed to hit the metal bed and thus it is recommended u place a 2-3mm thickness bakelite sheet on the machine bed. Adjust your Z travel so that you get complete through holes drilled edge to edge of the pcb and that the drill dosent touch the machine bed.

Sorry didnt read the second part to your question.

You can drill and route a stack of upto 4, 1.6mm thickness pcs only if ur spindle is very good and powerful and your machine is tightly built. For hobbyist work, one at a time is good.

    Video of "drilling" PCB

voodooengineering.com has a pretty good video of drilling PCBs. They don't have their etching video up yet though.

He uses a vacuum table with the PCB and only drills half way through the material. Then he flips the board over and drills the other side.

No offense intended, but that's just nuts! It more than doubles the drilling time and wear and tear on the machine and has a significant chance of misalignment.

Commercial PCB houses use a cardboard-like disposable board under the PCB, then drill right through the PCB. Often they stack 2 or 3 PCBs when drilling.

I use vacuum to hold PCBs while milling and drilling. And I drill through.

The holes are tiny and amount to only a minuscule amount of the total board area.

The vacuum easily copes with that. Drill after milling.

Do you have a photo of your machine Greolt?

I've been thinking of building a small dedicated PCB router/driller.

Drilling through the fiberglass PCB material is MUCH more damaging to the carbide drill bits than drilling into aluminum or even steel. However, that is not the best way to do it. Sooner or later your machine table will look like swiss cheese.

Rather, as others have stated, you would use a backing material under your PCB that you drill into to - often referred to as a "Spoil". This can be any economical material such as wood or plastic.
