    Piper J3 cub

I'm interested in the Piper J3 Cub as well as also the Super Cub. I heard there are many different plans for scratchbuilding but I was wondering if anyone has looked at them. I heard about the SIG plans.

Can anyone tell me which scales are popular for scratchbuilt J3's?

I almost thought about building a scale model that would support a 5hp version. Any thoughts on that?

There's a guy out there somewhere I heard of who did his J3 plans in AutoCAD or some CAD program.

    Any help, links, suggestions.

    Greg,
The Sig 1/4 scale Cub is 84" wingspan for the clipped wing and 105" for the regular wing. It would fly well with a FS 90 or a 120 and does not need the extra HP. The full scale was only 75 hp with a 35' ws. They are not the speediest of aircraft but very forgiving for RC.
If you have any questions I may be able to help as I have a set of plans but they have been separated for building.

I'd be interested in more hearing more about the plans. I had a scratchbuilt kit someone destroyed and I tried to rebuild it to no avail. It'd already gotten too weak.

I like the design of the rudder as well as the airframe itself.. The wings are an added cool feature :-)

I'm a newbie to balsa, well sorta but, I was hoping I could use some of the lighter strong woods too.. the same as in my other project.

I heard there are 1/2 and 1/3rd scale models too..

I like the idea of flying a large plane but I normally have engines like the OS MAX 46FX.

    Greg,
Balsa USA has a 1/3 kit and you may be able to get the plan for it. I don't know if you are on rcuniverse but if not join. You could advertize in the wanted forum for a set and should come up with them at a decent price.
OS 46 would be a bit under powered for this size but I know there are some cubs around that will work with it. As for working with balsa it is just like any other wood when gluing. If going to the larger ac you may be using some spruce for spars. Remember you don't build to crash you build to fly. The old saying goes there are 2 crash's that come with an ARF and you just do not know when.

I'm going to try RCUniverse. I figured for any of the 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 scaled cubs could use a mix of spruce and balsa, maybe even Basswood, etc.

    Thanks!
