    Linux cad cam recommendations

    G'day,

Me and a mate are embarking on a 3 axis router build but commercial software just isnt an option and besides that I ditched Windows a few years ago and am currently running Onyx 64 which is based on 64 bit Ubuntu.

Anyway I'm wondering what Cad and Cam software you have been using on Linux and what you would recommend to run on a 64 bit system to fully realise the potential of a 3axis machine.

I dont mind taking the time to learn stuff probably but dont like stuff if its to esoteric or isnt very well supported.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very happily running Linux and EMC2 on my mill, but most of my heavy CAD/CAM work (okay, then, ALL of it) is done on either BobCad or VCarve Pro on my office Windaze computer.

Certainly some of the higher end CAD/CAM programs must come in a Linux version, but I'm not familiar with them. But that's because I'm running a hobby shop, and can't afford to spend $20,000 or more on Cad/Cam.

    Hi,

On Linux i used some great cad / cam software

Librecad: Cad software to do some 2D work.
Heekscad and heekscnc: CAM and CAD software. Use it to generate gcode with 2D and 3D files.
    Pycam: gcode generator
F-engrave: vcarving tool. Slow but good results.
Freecad: new 3D software. Early stage of dev but you can do a lot with it.
Pcb2gcode: get code to engrave your PCB for electronics projects.

I wrote a post about this tools but in French http://www.equinoxefr.org/post/2012/...outils-libres/
