I am asking if will be cheaper Alans picstep driver with 2 LM18245 or microchip driver board with an L298

The price is not the problem, as far as I could read. It is only about $4 and can drive two motors. The problem is the motors they can drive are not Stepper. :-(

I think you don't need to use the LM18245 in Alan's or similar boards if you don't want to microstep. :-)

?? Are we talking about AN822 fom Microchip? Title; Stepper Motor Microstepping with PIC18C452? this specifically drives steppers.....

It's limited to the capacity of the l298 as far as motor V and A are concerned.

Alans Picstep is a simpler, better and more powerful solution I think.. and it also does microstepping

An interesting combination would be to pair the PIC circuit up with a pair of ir2183 bridge drivers and some irf460 mosfets. That would potentially make a 10+ amp, 100v+ driver.
