STA505 (Quad Half Bridge for audio) to drive bipolar???

I have some ST STA505. it's Quad Power Half Bridge for audio purpose.
Can it be use to drive bipolar stepper?

any advantages?
any disavantages??

You'll need something like a L6506 in front of it to provide the current control with sense resistors, and some fast diodes for flyback protection as its not rated for primarily inductive loads and doesn't appear to have internal ones. Also the 40v max Vce is low so will need some careful thought about actual supply volts and back-emf protection/dumping.

Also its not the easiest physical package to work with but that may not be an issue.

I should think that could be made to work OK. How many do you have? You wouldn't be willing to donate a couple would you? - I am currently designing my own bipolar board based on PIC CPU and L298 output stages (because they are cheap) but looking for something better...

I have 8 chips of STA505, my friend who work as technician on home theather repair gave it to me.
He also gave me Switching Power Supply Controller, Sanken SMA-Z1001 but I can't find the datasheet anywhere.

I have build controller using L297+L298 but it can't do micro stepping.
Planning to make other controller using L6506 + L6203 + L6210.

The SAM-Z1001 is an obsolete part from 1999 or before, used on Eizo and Fujitsu monitors and apparently quite unreliable from a quick Google. Lots of places have stock for repair purposes but I doubt you'll find a datasheet as not available for new designs. It seams to be some sort of switched mode controller but given modern parts are available cheaply I'd not bother with it.

I've looked at the L6506/L6203/L6210 set but came to the conclusion that the L298 + 4 BYV27 diodes is a cheaper option. What were you planning to use for the microstepping controller?
