I also would like to know if anyone knows if it works, and what think about this ones: http://pminmo.com/3axis/3axis.htm, http://www.cenece.com/ceneceC4.
would be used for small and medium unipolar stepper motors

The instructables circuit has some troubling aspects and may or may not work as it depends on selection of components, and physical layout of the build. In general the logic to generate the step sequence is ok.
Phil, Still too many interests, too many projects, and not enough time!!!!!!!!

    So far...

I have built this circuit for my router. So far I have etched and stuffed the cuircit board (very detailed instructable) and I have 3 motors turning. Parts so far are at about $59 through Digikey. I am in the middle of the table build now and wont have it finished until after christmas so I wont know the outcome until then.

I think the logic is fine however I get ALOT of jitter in the motors caused by noise and I can't run Kcam mor than about 2 ipm with more than one axis moving. I am going to tinker with ballast resistors and maybe a chopper circuit. But for the money and my first homebuilt circuit it has been fun.

If anyone builds this off the instructable, order a female db25 connector not male like the parts list calls out. save yourself the cost aof a $7 gender changer!

Just an short update. most of the jitter I refer to in this thread is my own fault. I didn't tie the ground back on some of the chips. (my bad!) I now am in the begining phases of testing. I have three axis turning at about 8 ipm.

Using 200 oz/in motors from probotix, McWire controller board and 1/2 - 10 acme lead screws. I used the inverted alumimum angle with skate bearing linear rails and a hubbard power supply. All built around baltic birch. So far I am in it for just over $400, but I still have to purchase software.

I might purchase motor drivers down the road, but for now I'm very happy with the McWire design. It's kinda cool to say you built it from the ground up!

    gecko or diy

All things considered it is probably cheaper to buy a gecko, Keeling has some cheap combo deals. If you want to try building your own check out the industrial stepper reference design from Cypress. You can probably tweak it for midband resonance compensation, morphing and synchronous pwm in place of the chopper. Even unmodified this is better than most of the designs on the web which also lack midband, morphing, and are noisy choppers and not as easy to modify. No verilog which is good and bad, if you really like verilog try a coolrunner II and check out Mariss's tutorial. The PSoC runs standard "C" & some assembly language; and even if you don't know C psoc express will generate the code for you.

pminmo, what aspects of this circuit do you find troubling?

At the time of my post there were a number of things missing including the physical layout. Looks like it's been updated since then.
