newbie looking for advices

hello everyone
thank you for taking the time to read this. i have been reading tons on stepper controllers and i feel more confused now than i did before i started. i want to build my own controller but i'm not sure what i need. my stepper motors are uni-polar. if i build my own boards will it be compatible with the software out there. could someone tell me what i need, and where i could find the schematics.
