    Low Cost Metal Frame Router

I thought it would be fun to see if I could make a router table out of 18 ga. sheetmetal.

The object was to build a table (24"x24" cutting area) out of one sheet of of 18ga., screw togethor and make the rails.

The metal could then be cut on a plasma, bent up and assembled in a weekend.

It is looking promising. Here is a picture.

If there is interest I will post some plans when I am done.

    Good thinking Mike !

The machine looks great so far.

Do you mean to make the rails using sheetmetal as well, or to add them after ?

I for one will definately watch to see the end result.

    Russell.

    Hi Mike,

Interesting idea. I will watch to see what the difficulties could be and I am interested in the plans.

The rails (as such) are sheetmetal and the slides are naylon.

It is working better than I thought. I will post some more pictures this weekend.

The first one is driven by lead screws and the next one will be belt driven, then rack and pinion. They will make a good toy to play as they are cheap to build.

I also am going to make an insert for a plasma cutter

Can you put enough structure to provide rigidity?
Phil, Still too many interests, too many projects, and not enough time!!!!!!!!

That is not a problem. The only problems so far is making it so it doesn't require any welding or machining.

By the way you have a great site

    Thumbs up Great Design!

    Mike
Looks like another great design you have come up with!

It should be very inspirational for the CNC builders that don't have welding or machining equipment or skills.
The metal frame will solve at least one problem for those wishing to adapt a router table for plasma cutting.

I'll be following your build with interest.

wow looks great! can't wait to see more.....I will be keeping an eye on this project and wait to see the final plans/demensions? My only concern is how rigid will it be? and if there is any other way then plasma to cut it?

I will post plans when it is done. The internet is down at work so there is a delay in posting more pictures.

The frame is very rigid. It can be cut out with a shear or power snips. I am cutting it out with a shear right now.

The only problem right now is time but it is progressing.
