I have been looking at THK linear bearings. Do they only support substantial weight in one direction i.e. lying flat or can they be edge mounted? I am referring to the ones with bearings on both sides of the rail. Is there a substantial advantage to these units over the DIY steam pipe and roller blade wheels for a wood/sheet aluminum cutting router for a home workshop? I have a bit more money than time and figured that buying those bearings might make for a simpler, more rigid machine but I am a bit too green to really know. Can anyone set me straight? thanks Scott |

| There are different types, that support different loads in different orientations. Some can support equal loads in all directions, some may only carry half the load when rotated 90°. Keep in mind that even small ones can usually carry 1000lbs or more. Also keep in mind that they are only as straight and rigid as what they are mounted too. They won't really add any rigidity to a machine, but they do make building a machine much easier.
