    5 Starts vs 1

I read in an article that chosen single start ACME screws versus double or 5 starts will give more precision / resolution on a CNC router.

I thought that 5 starts ACME are the best. Perhaps someone can explain to me why?

Also what is the difference between precision and resolution?

1 start will have more potential resolution over 5 start. The key is potential. With percision leadscrew having around +- 0.005 inch/foot deviation 1 start and 5 start will have similar accuracy. Check out this link

    Total Lead Screw Accuracy Calculator

However the same cannot be said about speed. Faster you spin the leadscrew the more issues you will encounter. Whip, stalling, lost steps, less torque. 5 start moves the nut 5x further per revolution than 1 start so less speed is require for the same ipm. All you require is the torque to drive the screw which again with stepper is more at lower rpm.

    Hope this helps.
