| The older machines had the battery actually soldered onto the boards, You may need a eletrical guy to do the handiwork. The battery is used in the same fashion as for a typical PC BIOS, it suplpies enough power to keep the system software ( parameters, machine settings, etc ) in memory for a lemgth of time after the machine is turned OFF. If the battery is exhausted, 9 times out of 10, your machine will not fire up, and you will have to re-load all your system disks. It would be a good idea to plan a annual backup of these settings. |

| Okuma used bubble memory until it was discontinued and did a brief stint with cmos and battery backup until they went to flash memory on the latter controls. If yours has a battery, you can tell by looking at the memory board. The cmos style will have a easily viewable battery cartridge on the memory board that you can see without pulling the board. If you have good old bubble or flash, there is no battery needed and they will hold contents for years without a battery. This is most likely what you have on your 5020. The later machines will give you an alarm after 10 years telling you to replace your battery whether you need it or not. |
