Okuma LB-15

I just bought a Okuma LB-15.

I need to know several things.

* What years were they made?
* What types of controls came with them?
* I need a complete set of manuals
* When mine was made
* What type of tooling it uses? (I didn't get any tools or a chuck)
* What types of lubricant it uses?
* If there is a parameter list?

P.S. I see lots of posts in this section on the LB-15.. maybe one of the admins can post a Sticky FAQ on the LB-15. That would reduce the amount of questions. I read a few which were somewhat helpful, but would like to see a whole FAQ article on it.

congratulation, good lathe!
What years were they made?
that's successfull model has long history, I'll check later if it is important
What types of controls came with them?
mainly OSP5000L, could be OSP500L or even OSP7000L in some special cases. Control is labeled on the front panel
I need a complete set of manuals
You can use general Okuma lathe manuals, if original is too difficult to obtain
When mine was made
tell me serial number
tools
keep in mind - only right side (chips go down) is appropriate for this lathe
What types of lubricant it uses?
Hydraulic oil, guideway lubricant and air lubricant in case if it has a parts catcher
chuck
the best way is to ask chuck seller to provide chuck for Okuma LB15. Other way is to post photo picture (with milimetric ruller next to it) of spindle nose for question
If there is a parameter list?
of course, what parameter do You need?
That would reduce the amount of questions.
could be very nice to have special place for chat format suggestions. I would suggest to separate mechanical - electrical - control - documentation - troubleshooting into separate rooms

It was made somtime between Jan 1990 and Dec 1991.

I would have to check again, but I think it has a 5020L.

I'm having problems with it already. Control doesn't seem to operate properly.

I would like to have a complete set of parameters in case I lose them.

Mine is Serial No is 0203 9851 (P23)

If this works out good I will go back to the seller and buy their other machine

S/N 0301 A199 (TL1)

Anyone have some spare 16C collets?

I think the Spindle is A2-6 and runs 15HP. It does have the chip conveyor. Anyone have a 6 or 8" A2-6 Kitagawa? Apparently most people use Kit chucks on this machine.

What type of right hand tooling? If I go to my tooling supplier, what should I order. I am thinking about using a Iscar STGBU and SGFH/SGIH cutoff.

It appears that this unit has an inoperable Hydraulic Unit made by Trochid, and some sort of power supply made by Elco #AD240-24

I would like to have the parts manuals too.

There are several error lights that are coming on. I tried running a program for one of the usual parts I make which is stressproof steel round bar stock 4" diameter. The operation faces the part on the end, cleans up the OD down to 3.875 inch, turns three .1875" inch grooves spaced .125 inch apart and .3875" from the faced end, then puts a .063" x 45° chamfer on the faced end, then bores to 3.000 inch. Then parts off to 3.500" length. Well, I'm new to the control. I am guessing I need to write a new program for this control. Anyone wanna do that for me? Tolerances are 0.003" all over entire part.

The hydraulic unit does not appear to start. Exactly what does this do?

Error Codes ???

There are several error lights that are coming on.
Name them
The hydraulic unit does not appear to start. Exactly what does this do?
Hydraulics control the chuck jaws, tailstock clamping / quill moving and turret index. If C-axis is used also the clamping of this axis.

If errors arise on the machine, they are are categorised into importance namely A,B,C,D. With A being critical, and D minor. An A alarm stops machine immediately ( ie. door opening ), D is a warning ( ie. low coolant level )
eg Lubrication motor operation is critical = A
and Low Lub Level = C with a timer countdown moving to B ( finish this cycle then stop m/c )

Diagnosis of errors is done through the "!" control panel button near F1 key, while the error is still active ( don't reset ), this page should show the level of error, the error code #, a hex code, possible reasons, a vague location of the error, and a vague solution fix.
If machine is reset, an error history should be displayed. Curser to this list and press <WRITE> to display error info.

These codes are important for you or the servicemen in rectifying machine or programming faults. If you cannot solve an error, then this code in full should be supplied to get any sort of assistance.

All machine build data ( #, build date, etc ) should be on a plaque near the main power switch.
You may also have a data spec. kit in the electical cabinet containing floppies of original parameters, initial test reports, special electical mods, etc.

Hope they are there, if not, your Okuma rep should be able to obtain your machine's essential records, $ , not sure ( no doubt they'll put a price on it ).

Ok, I will have in short order a list of errors. I had a friend of mine who is a industrial cutting tool salesman who is familiar with Okuma's give me a run down on what to do first.

I have not had the machine very long.

I would love to buy new tooling for it. What types should I order?

Are there any post processors that would work for this machine? I use MasterCAM, Mach3 and OneCNC.

What tooling should you buy? That is the same as asking how long is the piece of string!
Talk to your friend the tool saleman, I am certain that he would be only too happy to sell you some tools.
The choice of tooling is so connected to the work you intend doing on the lathe that to answer this question is impossible...
Look for a range of standard turning and boring tools to start with, then work up from there.
Good luck.
Brian.

I got quotes on a Kitagawa chuck and some tooling today from my supplier.

Does anyone out there have spare parts they could sell me?

Thanks,

I really could use anything that is available for spares and to replace a few missing items, plus fix the hydraulic pumps.

What do you have?

I'm gonna make a post in a little bit about the error lights. It's still a bit

Still have not found a decent manual.. anyone have one?

I bought a set of tooling and someone produced a Kit. chuck for me for about 1/2-1/3 the cost of new.
