Yes, if your in center work, with the tailstock retracted, you must command a tailstock interlock release. I THINK it was M157, but been 10+ years.
Spindle will not run I have set the tail sock parameter to centre work.
Tail stock is retracted spindle will not start.
Is there another parameter that needs to be set that I have missed?
i do have a M156 at the start of my program prior to the my g97 s 400 m03

Underthetire is correct.
M156: Center work interlock On.
M157: Center work interlock Off.
Insert M157 in your program prior to turning the spindle on. This will allow the spindle to run without engaging the tailstock.
