Sending programs via rs232 back to PC?

A recent post made me think of an issue I have not found a solution for, even though honestly I have not worked very much at finding one. I program using MasterCam and transfer the file to the lathe. OOOPS...its a 1988 LB15 with OSP5000L-G. Anyway, that works wonderfully. What I have found is that I occasionally tweak the program as I watch and the final program is much better and somewhat different than what I transferred initially. I have tried the most obvious ways...bottom line...what is the solution? How do I send the file back to the PC? With whatever software...it doesn't have to be MasterCam...

If you use cimco editor, open file transfer dialoge box, hit recieve and it will wait about 1 minute if I remember correctly, then run out to the machine, hit edit, extend, punch filename.MIN and write, you should be good to go, in mastercam under file there is edit/open external, open that and you will have access to the file transfer dialoge.

Well thats pretty much how I transfer to the machine. In that mode on the machine, however, there are very few selections. I can "read" or "punch". I tried "punch" on the machine and "receive" in MC to no avail. Maybe I should try "read" on the machine and "receive" in MC...dunno.

To send programs from the PC to the Okuma you have to READ at the machine and then SEND from the PC. Apparently you are able to do this successfully.

To send programs from the Okuma to the PC, you have to RECEIVE at the PC and then PUNCH from the machine. Have you tried this? What happens? Do you get alarms or error messages?

Got it to work! Punch on Okuma and receive on PC worked...the confusion (for me) was in the exact order and timing of the button pushing. You do not get the 30 sec (or so) window that you get when sending to the machine...you have about a 5 sec window. Regardless...now I have a backup of my largest repeat jobs. Now I don't have to play the "which program could I stand to lose" game every time I needed to load a new part program. Thanks.

I don't remember if the 5000 has an FDO index, you could store some your programs there if you have it.

Doesn't ring a bell...I think I am working with "x" amount (length) of good'ol bubble memory...It seems to be rock solid, but it scares the hell out of me.

Once you RECEIVE at the PC, you should have an unlimited amount of time to go to the Okuma and PUNCH the program. The PC should wait virtually forever... if not, there's probably a Receive Time Out setting in the PC software.

Well by default, MC will error if a signal is not read in a very short amount of time...but your logic is sound. I will look at the file transfer settings and see if there is a timer I can modify and buy myself more time.

For the record, if the machine has a floppy drive, then it will have the FD0: directory (most machining centers had the floppy, albeit some were the 8", but many of the lathes did not). The 5000/5020 series uses BB1: directory for all customer part programs and originally (in the 5000) was bubble memory. There is an upgrade to CMOS, which is what they introduced in the 5020 control.
