I'm considering picking up a 1989 Okuma MC-30VA. Unfortunately, I've found very little information on the web about this specific model so I thought I would ask the experts.
What do you think of this model generally?
Are there any particular areas of concern I should be aware of when inspecting the machine?
Are parts still readily available?
How friendly are the controls (osp 5020 I believe)?
Any particular limitations that I should be aware of?
Super slow machine, even for 1989. All Okuma's were.
Servo and spindle amps no longer supported by Okuma. Retro-fits from Okuma are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
All that said, not a common machine in the US, but very reliable. I would suggest you look for a Mori of the same vintage with a Fanuc. Parts are still available. My guess it's a 5000 control, not a 5020. Okuma had a leg up on control power back then, they did a lot the Fanuc's wouldn't.
You are very optimistic about OSP 5020. Please, make sure if it is not Fanuc control. No problem with electronic parts, I guess. There are few made by Okuma itself. At this machine could be no Okuma made electronic parts at all, that means all electronic components are common and commercialy awailable. You need electronic specialist to repair or address specialized companies.
