    Okuma, Good/Bad?

    Hello


    My employer was thinking about purchasing an Okuma MC-V4020. I'm just wondering what were some of the Good/Bad things people like about these machines/controls. I have no experience with Okuma, but I am quite familiar with Fanuc, HAAS, and Hurco's. I've seen a video on the Okuma MC-V4020, and it seems quite impressive from the outside.

    we got one MC-V4020 CAT-50 = coolant-thru unit since 2004, i have only good things to tell about this machine , really strong and rigid , reliable and easy to work with

    you will realy love the absolute encoders on the okuma , power on>cycle start , thats-it thats-all, no damn home position to set every morning

    Okuma has ALMOST always been good. It will blow the Hurco and HAAS away for sure. Okuma has been behind in milling in comparison to other high end stuff, but they are very reliable.

    we got 5 okuma milling here , the older one is a 1989 VR-40 that still run like the first day , we make part with some tolerances as low as .0002 pretty easily

    for the mc-v4020 it's a tank, you will never see the end of that machine , i run it at 150% of it's capacity every single and she never let me down a single minute

    we cut mainly Stainless Steel 304 and hardox on that machine

    but we also cut inconel 718 and 625, monel 400 hastelloy C276, titanium alloy and A-286 pretty easily and at high metal removal rates


    i will give this machine a 9/10

    the negative point come from the coolant pan with conveyor that cannot handle plastic chip without clogging the coolant pump

    there are many things, what is possible to cut only with Okuma. Especially, when accurate cuting speed is necessary - hardox, titanium, and vice versa - very soft materials

    I've got a 2005 mcv4020 with the osp100e control. I really like this machine. It runs great, and the control is very user friendly. I like the y up on the head. It makes running the machine more comfortable. I can reach the back of the enclosure without leaning over, and all the chips fall into the chip troughs and get washed into the conveyor. The only drawback I could see with the machine is if you didn't get the chip conveyor. They supply a small pan with wheels that rolls out toward the back of the coolant tank. The pan is small and would have to be emptied all the time. Better just spring for a chip conveyor from the start.

    I also have an okuma captain L370BBMW lathe with the p200 control. I'm also very happy with this machine. The pc built into the control is very handy, but it takes a little while to boot up and shut down.

    I also have an okuma millac 561v mill with a fanuc 31ia control. This machine is a beast with box ways and a big plus cat 50 spindle. This machine is also a great machine. The fanuc control works great but isn't as user friendly as the osp control. If this machine had the osp p200 control I would be in heaven This machine is a c frame machine and cleaning out the chips is a pita. Makes me appreciate the way the mcv4020 handles the chips.

    Okuma VTM 120YB & VTM 200YB

    Looking at the Okuma VTM 120YB & VTM 200YB. Does anyone have experience with this series of machines? What materials have you cut and how reliable is this type of machine?

    It's a relief to heart words like: Rigid, Accurate, Reliable, strong, hardox ,titanium, user friendly, "built like a tank" vs great value, affordable, priced right.

    I to like the idea of having the Y axis up on the head on the mcv4020 machine.

    I'll let my employer know.

    It's better than a HAAS, yes. Problem is some had low RPM spindles I think.

    You've got the extended table, so you could add a small 4th axis
    -you will find that 7000 RPM is slow for Alum work
    -any feedrate over 1500 mm/min will start to distort toolpaths when changing direction, checkout the tolerance control option, or super-nurbs ( higher feed options )
    -table travel in Y is a little narrow ( could be a little bigger )
    -can't take deep, heavy deep cuts with larger facemills ( stalls machine )
    -BT40 holders flex a little, in the neck area of the holder, when "hogging" the metal out ( harder materials )
    -make sure you have the larger memory capacity
    - & the DNC-B option is a must for 3D programs, as they can be quite long

    - also compare it to an MX55-VB, bigger in most areas, uses BT50 holders

    MC-V4020 mills are very low to ground , hope your operators are short!
    MB-66VA is a much better machine ,lager table and more room ,spindle will travel past the table.
    over 75 ipm must have high cut turned on ,
    our 4020's do have 15000 rpm spindles..
    The coolant screens suck, much surfacing causes clogs,and plastic don't even try
    The chip conveyor carries all the coolant out of machine into the chip hopper...
    the good : fast ,high rpm ,fast tool change,fast chip to chip, very user freindly control "osp -200 " easy editing at control
