the bracket and rod is the counter balance piston. it is not much of a problem where its located in my experience, but it would obviously be nicer somewhere else - you can extend the travel an inch or 2 if you move it like some customers aparently have.
as for the lack of a way cover, the rails and screws are high up enough that this also seems not to be a big issue. again, way covers for the Z certainly wouldnt hurt and i could see scenarios with tall work pieces using coolant that it might become a must.
