    NL-150 Lathe Second Tool Holder

With a tool post designed to primarily hold four turning tools, it begs additional capability. I recently saw a video by "smallblock" which incorporated a drilling attachment. Decided to use that as a guide to design my own fixture.

Finally managed to put together a prototype. Assumes a 1" diam. x 2 long" aluminum rod to be:
    1. Turned down to .994 diam.,
    2 Spot drilled,
    3. Drilled 1/4" diam 2" deep,
    4. End mill drilled 1/4" deep,
    5. Parted off ………

As the tools are mounted on individual holders and adjustable in 0.55" (Z) and 1.25 (X) offset increments, various length tools (drills, borers, mills etc.), may be utilized. The combinations are endless.

Checked the clearances and it works.

Longer pieces simply require that the holders be offset further on Z.

Larger diam. pieces can be accommodated by removing the center holder, leaving 2 holders.

Over the next few days I will mount the plate on the slide and try a live test.

    John

Well, it took more than a few days and a few more improvements but it looks like a viable option. Changes include:

    1. Added a slot on the plate and the bottom of the holder for a keyway to insure positive alignment.

    2. Increased the tool holder length to 1.75".

    3. Changed from individually drilled holders to MT-1. Individual holders proved to be a PITA and not as accurate.

Made the first holder today and drilled a 5.1 mm (for 1/4-20), worked like a champ. Next will be a MT-2 holder.

Now, will have to find the time to program the entire part.

Have turned over the plans to Novakon and they will search for a source to fabricate the fixtures.

    See attached photos.

shars.com sells a toolkit that looks almost exactly like that one. Shouldn't be hard to find on their site, but ask if you have trouble.
