Unhappy this is a shocking one

Hi was using my nm-200 for about 3 hours 2 knights ago still having some miner z axis feed isues so i just used the y axis for cutting out the part and the x axis would only have to feed 0.020 to the + side and every thing was great shut down properly.

went out tonight powered it up and went to set up and the x axis sounded like a little stripped gear then took off in the wrong direction

let up on the button it stopped pushed the button again and it went in the right direction then i wanted to just jog it and there it went in the wrong direction the it stopped and just stripping sound.

even in the MDI it just sat there and made the noise and this is the 2nd x axis stepper so i changed key board and it still did it so i went in the house.

do any one have the specs for the x axis stepper motor for the nm-200v2
nema ? and what the rpm and holding torque is to be shaft size won't matter i can machine up a new coupler

hope to here from every one and i will give novakon an email now i guess

Hi Hornby, with the mill powered down, turn the dial/hand wheel on the left side of the X ball screw. I think you'll find it binding up.
If so, you'll have to remove the left side ball screw support, clean and grease it if you need to get up an running now or if you can wait, get a bearing support and replace it.
There's no way to lube that steel on steel support, there is a "check ball" oil hole but it doesn't actually go into where the ball screw runs in the support.

The first line's of the Novakon instructions should be " Unpack and COMPLETELY disassemble mill and put back together while replacing all the parts that shouldn't have been used.
Nothing is tight and nothing is setup even close to correct and there are parts that are not fit for a manual mill, let a lone a CNC.

sounds like some scrambled or shorted wiring. the "noise" whenb not moving is a stall. could be mechanical, but more than likely wiring or bad mach3 settings.

hi i was emailed by rodney to try the stepper on the y axis cable and try that he thinks posable power wire to ground or to other wire

    try this tomorow

the float end of the x axis is still nice and free but i can see that it should have a bearing in there that might be my next thing to do

    thanks and good night

Stepper motors are pretty robust, not very common to have problems with the actual motor even though sometimes things seem to lead you that way.
If your ball screw isn't binding, like IHNF said, probably a wiring/connection problem.
You can test each wire going to the stepper from the driver with an Ohm meter. Check each one for short to ground (from the driver end with the motor connected, mill powered down of course) Then you can check to make sure there is no resistance from end to end of the cable.
Keep in mind, I have had trouble with the green screw terminals on the geckos as well, with the terminal not making good connection on the pins of the gecko. I'm not sure if loosing connection on one 1 phase if it would cause the problems your having or not.
The stepper motors are 1850oz/in, Nema 34 size, 12.7mm shaft.
If you do need a new stepper, Motiontek in Ontario has a good selection.
I built my cnc lathe with electronics from MotionTek a couple weeks after we bought the NM-200, the mill had stayed running long enough for a total of 36 hours in the past year(with MANY fixes in that 36 hours) before we finaly junked and rebuilt it so it works. It has more time running in the last week after refit then in it did in the last year.
The lathe has over 1600 hours and has never missed a beat since I built it.
The lathe runs some pretty hard turning in 4140 and 4340 HT with some parts up to 90 min each and sometimes running parts 16-18 hours straight 7 days a week.
