so after saving up some money and more than a little procrastination i finally buttoned up the major parts of the repair and have the spindle running again using a the vfd and 2 hp motor i have not connected the vfd to the output on the board so for now the spindle is under manual control. this was done to keep some of the rf interference out of the control case and i kinda like having separate control of the spindle. i am using a 1.5-1 ratio pulley so i have a range of 450-6000 rpm. while only going slightly over the motor rated speed of 3750 (i go to 4000 rpm to get 6000 on the spindle). the spindle is WAY smoother than it ever was with the dc motor and their is no stopping it. i think if you were to stop the tool now it would tear apart the belt. ill update again once i cut some real metal

So i have been running the mill a lot lately cutting aluminum and plastics just like before. its running good the only thing i notice is the z axis kinda grunts at the load of the head when i first start it up. it moves fine and holds tolerances fine but i think im at the limit for the air springs that are on it. so again does anyone know the specs of the air spring in case i have to replace them soon.

if its only at start up and not stalling, i doubt it has anything to do with the strength of the air springs (which arent really needed anyway). sounds more like perhaps something is sticking.

also, if it sounds more like an electronic grunt, it could be the stepper drive. mine make a strange noise for the first few inches when the machine is turned on. i think its something to do with the power supply capacitors charging up. once that initial move is over, its fine for the rest of its run. is doesnt seem to lose steps, just makes an odd noise. so basically a non problem.

    tjd10684,

Can you post some photos of your NM-145 with the new motor? Thanks!

    Dynoray,

In your NM-200 refit have you done more than just swap out the motor and VFD? I got the impression in one of your posts in this thread this is a shocking one that you may have changed some other parts of the system?

Thanks for posting the photos of your motor conversion tdj10684. That gives me an idea of the space that's required to fit everything in. Doesn't look like it leaves much room to add a power draw bar. I'm considering a similar conversion and would really like to add a PDB. Thanks again.

for the 200, mine is 1:1 at 4k with an ac motor. i dont know what theyve done for the replacement ac's on the new version.

you can also get a tekno spindle motor that runs 12k, 1hp or 2hp. italian made with a canadian inverter. i think the kit runs around $700.
Do you have a link to this spindle motor? I've googled the names tekno, techno, tecno and can't find any italian motor with that name. Thanks!
