The Tormach drag engraver worked fine for serial #s etc., but I wanted a cleaner cut on anodozed alumium, and the drag engraver kicks up a rough burred finish. So I made a spring loaded cutting engraver. I started with some 1/4" o.d, 1/8" i.d. 316 ss tubing. Put in a hand drill and sand down to just fit and slide smoothly in the tool holder. Then thread the i.d. for a shoulder stop screw for the spring interface. Next used an 1/8" endmill by hand to bore the clearance for a 1/8" carbide engraving tool. Next thread a 4-40 thread hole to retain the tool. Put some lube on the tubing for the sliding action. Came out to work well. I've been running 6000 rpm at 17 IPM.
