Smile Home made CNC Bb clarinet ?

I was thinking about having a CNC machine make Bb clarinets out of Grenadilla or Ebony wood (common clarinet materials), if I could get the .DXF / .DWG drawings done, and the G-Code done properly..

I know all the dimensional specs of 90% of clarinets made with wood.. so I could start there. But I was wondering if there'd be a market for this kind of thing? I'm sure it could be an easy job with a 5 axis mill though.

Ha Ha! Too funny!

The bore of the Bb clarinet should be between 0.575" to 0.589".. as it appears there are several different popular ones in use today, depending on the clarinet material and manufacturer. I have good dimensional data on the 2nd section before the bell. I have enough parts to make 6 clarinets with all the complete key sets I have.

I still have not found any good sources of wood. It seems to be extremely expensive.

No, that would NOT work.. It has to be Grenadilla or Ebony.. even Rosewood.

Most hardwoods have tripled in price in the last 10-15 years, and exotics like ebony have gone up even more. Any good quality wood is very expensive these days.

As an alternative, could you use the acrylic material used in pen blanks? (See e-bay). I’m not sure of it’s acoustic properties, but it machines easily, comes in beautiful patterns & colors, and polishes to a high luster.

There is a sort of plastic they use in making clarinets.. but it's expensive as well. It has good tone qualities, but I'm looking for the hardwood type.

The piece of ebony or grenadilla I need is 60" long and 2" square.

Grenadilla/African Blackwood source

I'm a Brass/ woodwind tech. If you have an Inst. repair business you can buy this from J.L. Smith and Co. It is sold in various randon length billets by the inch (1",1.25",1.5" dia.). The bell will be the problem because it flares out to about 3". You can buy a ready made bell from Allied Supply Corp. or the various wind inst companies. You will also need to buy a whole gob of key fitting tools, pads, corks, glue, springs, etc...
