Hello again,
My instructor set up a tour for Warmoth exclusively for me and another guitar builder. I went yesterday and was hosted by their head engineer. Spent about two hours in the factory - I was blown away - they really have quite the operation. They can cut up to twelve necks at a time using a 1" bull mill. The feed rate was very fast - I don't even want to guess what it was set at. The contours, pockets, and chambers on the bodies were cut to final depth in one pass! While I was in the sanding room, I learned a trick to sand inside the horns of the body – that has always been a pain in the @@@ to do! There is even a studio where ALL bodies and necks are photographed for posting on the website. The body you choose is exactly what you get. So how does one compete with that? The individual can't! I totally agree with Cyborg and RirHett as I am retired and going to school. Without my pension, it would be very difficult for my family to make do.
I wanted to share some pictures of my work with you all. I've emailed a few to CyborgCNC. So here are SNs:001, 002, 005 and the prototype. My waiting list through my college sits at 17 and growing. The logo on the headstocks are my initials - HT. I've got to design a truss rod cover -tried some pre-made covers and they don't look right with my headstock. I really dig the inlays on 005. I may have to start doing all my guitars like this. It really goes well with the logo.
I graduate in June; looks like I won't be able to fill the orders by then. So I'm going to have to build my CNC and find a place to run it if I am to continue the awesome craft of CNC lutherie.
Thanks to everyone in this forum who helped guide me through. I'm glad I found it last year. It only took me a year to decide to register and make a post.
Thanks to CyborgCNC for teaching me step-by-step on the design process and machining.
Before last year I didn't ever touch a hand-held router, didn't even know what a jointer did, and always screwed up using a hand plane. With the help of my instructor, classmates, numerous books, and this forum, I've come a long way.
Merry Strings and Happy Tremolos to all!
Bah Humbuckers!
