Drum Idea

I have an idea how to make drums with a cnc and decent wood.

just mill a bunch of rings that are derived from cutting profiles out of.. say a conga drum.. these circles could even be nested for maximum material usage. these can all be laminated together and sealed. if this isnt a good idea for accoustic reasons, maybe it can be used with foam to make a mold to make a fiberglass conga. i have some sort of synthetic conga drum and i like it allrite. its sorta flat, but then, it coist $70.

toca "player" series

This is not an uncommon strategy. Slats are made with beveled edges and then laid side by side across two lengths of duct tape (not shown). Run glue along the edges, and then use the duct tape to as straps to roll the barrel together.

CNC routing could be used for beveling the edges and engraving pretty on the sides of the drum.

ohwhite - yes - i have seen that design. i suppose that would be a bit easier.

how thick would the sheet be? anyone ever try it with acrylic? ive seen molded acrylic congas, but not machined..

any other NC centric drum tricks? i could imagine a bunch..

the method described by owhite is called barrel staveing. this makes a perfect round object. i should think that the joints, if useing acrylics, must be polished before glueing and they will show as opaque lines. all the angels are relative to the center of the circle desired.

Geof will become famous soon enough

Have a look at this: http://www.queuebert.com/laminates/

He cuts rectangles out of baltic birch and then laminates them together. Is this something like you are thinking about but in your case each ring would match the profile for its place in the drum shell.

Musicians will usually agree that the nearer you can get to solid wood, (a one piece steam bent shell being 'best') the better the sound. However ply and laminating single veneers are much cheaper and easier to mass produce. I try to find some middle ground and yes they sound as good as they look!
