THe only thing I dont like about that is that it leaves a hole where there shouldn't be one
I like the idea of the removable tabs- you machine all but about a quarter-inch or so of material to give yourself a cutting guideline and leave the rest there.

    Hi Ed
Yes, that works only for bolt on necks. My kid has been refinishing a Schecter (sp?) that he owns. It has a hole in the same position so some of the commercial makers put a hole there for some reason..

Default Making a "Strat" style guitar

    Guys,

I'm a newbie when it comes to this site, but not to guitar making. I see a lot of discussion on cutting the body, but not much on the neck, except for attachment. I prefer the tab type fixturing for sure, it's easy to remove the tab by hand after cutting. I joined this site because I am getting away from template routing. A couple of things to remember when building a guitar, 1) use tone woods (I believe the strat was made from swamp ash), and 2) remember the fingerboard is radiused (I believe Fender uses a 10" radius), and the best fingerboards are made from rosewood or ebony. You might want to read up on the fret spacing and scale sizes. I will try to post some info on the guitar scales later. I own a company that makes dreadnought guitars.

I'm not unfamiliar with guitar-making , myself. And I'm probably a fan of yours. I might have to pick your brain

Scrapydoo welcome to the site and it's really good to have you aboard. Do you have a website we can go look and drool!

Gerry that is a great find and thank you. I just bought a pre-slotted blank because I didn't have a bit and couldn't find one.

Working a bit more on the model of the Strat Neck. I have been studing the blends between the neck and the headstock and between the neck and the tenon. Here are a few photos to compare the final model against.

A set of plans is great for outlines, but rarely help with 3D curves and the way different surfaces blend into each other. You have to take the original in your hands and feel the flow of one surface into another.

    Hi Greg,

I downloaded the dxf and when I open it in rhino I am missing one curve (upper left hand looking at the drawing) but I get several multiple curves overlaying each other in different places. ???

he is talking about the body.dxf file , it has one of the splines blown.
I am interested taking a shot at one of these also. I do not have much to offer as far as guitar design goes, but I do have extensive 3d modeling and nc programming experiance to offer. I have several cad packages available for modeling and file translations if needed.

Moldmaker was it missing for you too? Have you checked for multiple entities on top of each other?

try this, I added a bridge curves that looks natural.
The original dxf was created in ProE, it does not do splines well in dxf
format, but it does have the best igs translator out there.
Included is a clean dxf & igs file.

I intend to build 2 of them, the machine will not be in till the first of may.
but that doesnt hinder me from modeling and programming.

I'm needing to start the modelling process, but I can't draw a line with a ruler
So I have a pretty steep learnign curve ahead,

Continuing work on the Strat neck model. You know how it is, triing to grap a free moment here and there. These are a few photos of the tenon end of the neck. Now that I have this end drawn I can make sure it fits into the body. Any suggestion as the amount of clearance that should be allowed between the neck and the body? about .050"? In the past I have made them with no clearance and had to sand a bit to much to get 'em to fit.
