SL1 hydraulic pump standard opperation

We have an old SL1 that I picked up some time back, starting a retrofit to Mach3. I have never run it before and I am new to CNC Lathes.

Question: Does the hydraulic pump run all the time. Or does it create a charge and cycle like an air compressor? Does it only run when you are NOT in eStop/Reset

I am just trying to understand the basic operation of the subsystems.

Thanks for you help,
JH

Should run all the time. Should not be on an Estop circuit. I know Okumas are, but I have also seen them throw parts from a bad check solenoid once the pump stops.

So you flip the main switch/breaker and the pump should come on and stay on.

Thanks for the info,
JH

There is a couple of reasons the pump always runs, The turret needs the pressure to keep clamped solid and the drawbar needs to be pressurized and hydrolic oil keeps it lubricated.

My first SL-1, I had the pump on a switch, I kicked it off if the machine sat idle, like going out for a lunch break or manually entering programs. other than that, they come on upon power up from main power switch. the main pressure gage should read 500 lbs when pump running

Thanks for the info Wayne. (your shop is kick butt with 4 Mori Lathes BTW)

This will also explain why the tool turret is a little loose while the machine just sits idle. I guess it needs the pressure to lock and hold it into place.

Thanks,
JH

ME TOO!!

Hi,

I am also currently trying to refit a even older Mori lathe ( a TL-2) with a Softservo System.

What I need to figure out is how the toolchanger works, i.e. which solenoids operate which part, and how the machine "counts" the tool position.

Do you have any ideas on how you are going to implement the toolchange cycles in mach?

Also

My machine has a old "Fixed Ratio" gearbox that also clanks and grinds different gears to change speed, and I am not too sure how this all actually operates.

When I figure these i will be able to program (I hope) the ladderworks PLC on the softservo system to do this all automatically

I will try to keep the zone upated on my progress.

I haven't thought to much on the tool changer yet, but I think it will be very simple. I plan to base it off of my VMC project and its tool changer logic and state machine code:

Thanks,
JH
