Bypassing NOT READY SIGNAL, Mori SL-1A

I have an early 80's Mori SL-1A. I purchased this lathe at an auction back during the summer. Got it home and found the spindle drive had an Overcurrect alarm. To make a long story short, the drive is cooked and will cost a lot to repair.

Is it possible to bypass the "MACHINE NOT READY" signal coming from the spindle drive? I would like to evaluate the machines condition (ball screws, servo's, ways, etc) to see if the machine is worth installing another drive in...before spending the $.

Anyone on here done this before? The spindle drive is a 626 CIMR-MT2-7.5KW. The machine has a Yasnac LX-1 control.

Thanks,
Nate

Does the drive look like the on in this thread?

If so, I may be able to help jump that

If not, the newer ones, They used multi pin connectors as opposed to screw terminal blocks, some are difficult to alter

Hi Wayne,

It looks similar but I think mine is newer. It is a CIMR-MT2-7.5K.

This is what I have,

YASKAWA YASNAC CIMR MT II 7.5K SPINDLE DRIVE - eBay (item 180428768801 end time Jan-29-11 06:23:25 PST)

Although mine has a charge detect card that fills the upper left hand corner.

Thanks,
Nate

I know of that seller, They are pretty good parts source. I have bid
for stuff against them on Ebay Items in the past.

I dont have any Docs on that drive, Maybe that seller can give
you the pin configuration and you could build a break out jumper
strip if you have the time and patience

Yaskawa used to be pretty good about giving out documentation
if you give them serial number to machine,It would take a few weeks
but they used to give manuals and docs for free if you were willing to
wait a few weeks

I have delt Not with them in a few years, not sure if they still do that anymore

You said in another thread they still supply brushes for drives and Tachs,
Im seriously thinking on contacting them and picking up some tach brushes
even if they are expensive, I have two separate tachs I seem to fuss with a lot lately

Thanks Waynno,

I will give Yaskawa a call.

Concerning the tach brushes. I purchased some probably about 4 years ago. I have not purchased any lately. Hopefully they still supply them. I think that at the time they were around $6 or $8 a piece so I'm sure they've gone up.

It's getting harder to keep these old beasts running from a parts perspective. Luckily they seem to be pretty bulletproof, at least that's been my experience.

Thanks again,
Nate

Just on the control side. Mori does a pretty decent job with hard parts still.

I contacted Yaskawa about bypassing the spindle drive in order to bring the machine on ready. The guy obviously had never dealt with anything this old. His idea of old being mid to late 90's. I have ran into this problem before with Yaskawa although I'm sure any older machine from any manufacturer will have similar support.

Does anyone here have anyone in particular at Yaskawa or at a private business that you deal with that would have knowledge of this vintage machine? The tech guy I spoke with today said it was impossible to do what I wanted but i've found that generally (99%) of the time isn't the case.

Thanks
