    Sealing HDU to glass-like finish

How do we seal high-density urethane (Corafoam, Precision Board, etc.) to a glass-like finish?

I tried with Krylon acrylic sealer and Varathane Diamond wood finish. The best results were achieved by using a combination of both, successively, with plenty of drying/curing time between each.

But still, the finish was not the glass-like finish expected ...

    Thanks.

Use a spray on polyester, similar to what is used for fiberglass products.

I've used Duratec with great result: Duratec Polyester Surfacing Primer

Can be sanded and polished to an excellent finish.

    Duratec

    Keebler303,

Duratec sounds like a good option, thanks. They have a series of products: sealer, primer, coater, etc.

Which combination of their products have you used on HDU successfully?

    - Polyester Sealer
    - Polyester Base Primer
    - Polyester Surfacing Primer
    - Polyester Clear Hi-Gloss Additive
    - Polyester EZ Sanding Primer
    - Polyester Hi-Gloss Coating
    - Vinyl Ester Hi-Gloss Topcoat

    Thanks again,

    Perry

I have only used the gray polyester surfacing primer. I have used it on MDF and on fiberglass. I've never used it on HDU but I'm sure it would work fine there too. I use it for small patterns for fiberglass molds. I applied it using a "dump gun" which lets you put it on quite heavy. It leaves a pretty coarse orange peel finish. I sand with 320 grit to knock it down pretty smoother and then wet sand with 600 on up. I normally finish with buffing compound on a buffing pad to get it shining. Links below to the supplier I use. Make sure you get the eroxide curing agent if you don't have it already.
