    9X20 cross slide help

Ok I was checking and adjusting the lathe the other day and well the chuck run out is great and the saddle is go the compound is ok could be better will fix soon BUT the cross slide is out. Heres what i have if I back the cross slide all the out to the stop and put a dial indicator on it as I screw it across the saddle to the other stop it is out by .002". Now I tried to adjust the gibs but I cant get it in. It seems to me that in order to get the cross slide dialed in that I need to shim the dove tail on the side opposite of the gib screws only half way from the back of the slide to the center. The main problem is it tracks straight and true for about half way then it starts going out and ends up .002 out. I loosened all the gibs screws and tighend them to just take out any slop and if I tighen the back gib at all the crossslide can go out as much as .003 and if i keep the back screw just snug and tighen down the front gib snug to where the crossslide is actually to stiff its still out by .0015 once fully traveled in. So how do I fix this or am I SOL and its just China quality and I must learn to work with it? Please help if you need better explanation please ask i will do my best sorry no pics perhaps in the nesxt day or so i could get pics.

When you turn the O.D. of a piece without tailstock support, is the piece tapered?
Is the headstock lined up on the ways?

Well chalk it up to being a newb to lathes. I found an alignment article and did all the steps and the cross slide is only out by .0015" and after further reading I have found out that this is common on lathes it is offset by a slight amount so that when you face a piece it will be concaved just a little which is apparentlly normal (so stuff will sit flat). All though it would be nice to have it concave by only .0001"-5". I cant complain much as this is a HF 9X20 and I picked it up from a guy for $350 and it was barelly used (still covered it the nasty red grease). Thanks for the help just didnt know my tools but I am learning.
